Privacy Policy

You can read every article, issue and calendar listing on this site without an account, a password or a purchase. This page explains, in plain terms, what information does pass back and forth when you visit, and who handles it.

Who runs this site

CivilWarNewsMagazine.com is published by Historical Publications LLC of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, the publisher of Civil War News. Questions about this policy go toinfo@historicalpublicationsllc.com.

What we do not collect

• No registration, logins or reader accounts on this site.
• No payment or credit-card information. Subscriptions, gift subscriptions and back-issue orders are handled by SimpleCirc and by the Historical Publications LLC store — separate sites with their own privacy policies.
• We do not sell, rent or trade information about our readers to anyone.

Visitor statistics

The site counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, so we can see which pages readers use and how quickly they load. We see totals and trends, never a named person. Cloudflare states that this service does not use cookies. SeeCloudflare’s privacy policy.

Hosting and security

The site is hosted on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare receives your IP address and browser details with every page request, so it can deliver the page and turn away automated abuse, such as programs trying to copy the whole archive. That information is used to run and protect the site, not to build a profile of you.

Banner advertisements

The banners on these pages are served by ArtifactSearch.com, a service of Historical Publications LLC, rather than an outside ad network. When a banner is shown or clicked, ArtifactSearch records which banner it was, whether it was seen or clicked, the web address involved, that it ran on Civil War News Magazine, the time, and your browser’s user-agent line (for example, “Chrome on a Mac”) so automated traffic can be screened out. Your IP address is used only to limit repeated requests and is not stored with the record. No cookies are set and no advertising profile is built. To choose which banner to show, the page also tells ArtifactSearch what kind of page it is (for example, the home page or an article) and whether it is being viewed on a phone or a computer. None of this identifies you. Clicking a banner takes you to the advertiser’s own website, which follows its own privacy practices.

Newsletter sign-up

Each page carries an optional sign-up box for the Historical Publications newsletter. If you fill it in, your email address, and your name if you give it, go to Constant Contact, the service that sends the newsletter, and are used only to send it. The form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA, which loads with the form and checks that a real person is signing up; Google handles that check under its ownprivacy policy. Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link, or you can write and ask us to remove you. We never share the list.

Email and calls

If you write or call us — about a subscription, an article, advertising or permission to reprint — your contact details and message are used to answer you and for nothing else. They are not added to a mailing list.

Fonts, search and sharing

• Fonts. The lettering on these pages loads from Google Fonts, so Google receives the ordinary request information needed to deliver it.
• Site search. Searching the magazine happens inside your own browser: the page downloads the article index from this site and does the matching on your device. Your search words appear in the page address, which, like every page request, passes through Cloudflare, but they are not sent to any search company.
• Share buttons. The Facebook, X and Email buttons are plain links. Nothing is sent to those companies unless you click one.
• Back-issue list. The Back Issues page loads its current list of issues from the Historical Publications LLC website. Ordering happens on that store and on SimpleCirc.
• Outside links. Links to civilwarnews.com, Civil War News on Facebook, SimpleCirc, advertisers and our sister sites take you off this site. Those sites follow their own privacy policies.

Cookies

This site’s own pages set no cookies and store nothing in your browser. Cookies you may receive come from the newsletter sign-up form, through Constant Contact and Google reCAPTCHA, and, if Cloudflare asks your browser to pass a quick security check, a short-lived Cloudflare cookie recording that you passed. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and every article and issue will still be readable.

Children

Civil War News is written for collectors, historians and preservationists. This site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes to this policy

If the site’s practices change, this page will be updated and the date at the top revised.
