About Civil War News
Civil War News began in 1974 as The Civil War Book Exchange — a way for collectors and readers to find the books and material they were after. Half a century later it is the magazine of record for the Civil War community: the title people turn to for what is being saved, what is being sold, what is being written, and where everyone is meeting next.
The paper covered the field monthly for decades. With the May–June 2024 issue it converted to a bimonthly magazine — better paper, better photography, more room for the long pieces the subject deserves — without changing what it reports on.
What We Cover
Preservation is the spine of it. Which ground is threatened, which acres were bought, which easements closed, and which organisations and volunteers did the work.
Battlefields, museums, and historic sites — reported from the ground, with what has changed since you were last there.
Arms, equipment, and artifacts — muskets and carbines, revolvers and edged weapons, artillery and ordnance, uniforms and insignia, examined closely enough to be useful to someone holding one. Plus the market itself: auctions, shows, and what pieces are doing.
Books. New scholarship read and assessed by people who know the field, so subscribers know what is worth the shelf space before they buy.
The calendar. Shows, reenactments, living history, battlefield tours, seminars, and conferences nationwide — free to list, and maintained continuously.
